You can never be ‘Too Safe’!
That’s what a fellow parent might tell you during a dinner conversation, when you’re finally out on a date with your better half! Your child of 3 years is not home alone, of course – your parents are at home looking after them. ‘But I’ve fully foolproofed my home’, you say, with a sense of unbridled confidence.
And that’s when they repeat that phrase to you…
The fact of the matter is, ‘One hundred percent’ child safety is something that no parent can guarantee. All they can do, is try their very best to ensure the home is a safe space for their growing children. Child Safety 101: The Ultimate Checklist of Safety Rules at Home for Kids
The fact of the matter is, safety for children is something that should never be compromised. Dive right into our comprehensive checklist of child safety tips, so that safety at home for kids never becomes an issue you need to grapple with!
General
In the end, it’s all about the ‘larger picture’. Follow these general tips, to effectively baby proof the house and keep danger at bay!
- Install smoke detectors. Fire can be a potential hazard. Even the most ‘secure’ buildings have gone up in flames.
- Use Baby Safety Gates. This one’s a must, if your house has stairs. Even if it doesn’t, you don’t want your baby wandering all around the house, once they learn to crawl!
- Remove Potential Choking Hazards. You will be amazed to learn how the ‘littlest’ things lying around your home, such as small batteries, can pose serious choking hazards. Make sure you get rid of all such things.
- Cover all electrical outlets. The world’s a playground for your little one, who will soon want to thrust their fingers into those electrical sockets! Make sure you cover them all, and even keep those electrical cords away from their sight.
- Use a ‘closed’ toy box. Believe it or not, but if you have a large enough toy box, your child can actually get stuck inside it! Make sure you use one without a cover.
Tip: Ensure you check this device regularly, and re-install batteries, if needed.
Bath Safety
Safety for children is especially important, within the confines of the bathroom!
- Don’t leave your child alone in the bathroom, whether they are in the shower or bathtub, or not.
- That toilet lid needs to be closed, and secured with a lid lock.
- You want to place a non-skid mat on the shower floor.
- Ensure that there are no buckets filled with water, lying around.
Kitchen Safety
Safety rules at home for kids are incomplete without child safety tips in the kitchen!
- Ensure that sharp objects like knives and scissors are well out of their reach, and stored carefully in a drawer that is locked.
- Use gas knob covers, so your little one can’t turn the gas on by themselves.
- Unplug all appliances like blenders, after you have used them.
Fire and Burn Safety
Yes we might have installed those smoke detectors, but then, ‘prevention’ is better than ‘cure’!
- Ensure that you have a fire escape plan in place, and that you have practiced it well.
- Keep all lighters and matchboxes away from your children.
- You want to use ‘cool’ nightlights that are kept well away from your bed sheets and drapes.
- This one’s for burn safety. If you’re drinking hot liquids of any sort, you don’t want to be holding your baby. Even when you’re cooking something on the stove, you don’t want them near you!
Tip: You want to ensure that at least one window in each room can be used as a fire escape route.
The Living Room
You might think this is the last place your child is unsafe, but you will be surprised to learn it’s not!
- You want to put corner guards on all the sharp edges of furniture in your home. This includes the edges of your dining table, which can be especially hazardous where it comes to causing injuries to kids.
- You want to ensure that the curtains and blinds you have installed are without ‘cords’, so your child does not get entangled in them.
Poisons
There are several things lying around your house that can poison your child, if you’re not careful with them.
- You want to keep all the things that pose a ‘poison threat’ to your child, well out of their reach and locked away. These include, but are not limited to, medicines, cleaning liquids and even, dishwater soap!
- Apart from that fire detector, you also want to install carbon monoxide detectors in all areas of your home.
